Safety-Engineered Sharps

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines a safety-engineered sharp as a "non-needle sharp or needle device with a built-in safety feature or mechanism that effectively reduces the risk of an exposure incident." Examples of safety-engineered sharps include: syringes with guards or sliding sheaths, retractable needle systems, and shielded or retracting scalpels.
