Mike Swain Honored with National Fire Prevention Award

Michael Swain, supervisor of fire prevention services, has been honored with the Glenn Gaines Excellence in Fire Prevention award.

The national award was presented Feb. 27 at the Campus Fire Safety/Fire Code Academy Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

The award recognizes effective fire safety education through program development, delivery, organization and creativity in an effort to reduce the number fires on campus and in off-campus student housing.

The presentation ceremony highlighted Swain’s roles as top fire prevention official on campus, as district chief in the Greenfield Fire Department and as president of the Center for Campus Fire Safety.

This award is named after Glenn Gaines, former Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator for the U.S. Fire Administration. Gaines, who died in 2015, had a strong commitment to campus fire safety and fire prevention.

Swain, who had met Gaines and discussed campus safety with him, said he was especially honored because Gaines embodied the best in fire prevention.

“Fire prevention is not just a job. You have to believe in what you do,” Swain said.
