Job Description:

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director for Academic Safety, or other person designated by the Executive Director EH&S, develops, implements, and manages all aspects of a comprehensive laboratory and chemical safety program. Serves as the Chemical and Industrial Hygiene Officer for the campus and experimental stations, including setting safety policies & practices, conducting assessments and monitoring regulatory compliance. May also provide chemical and industrial hygiene consultative services to other campuses, agencies and municipalities as required. Provides related emergency response procedures and coordinates related training activities


Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene or science related field with five years of directly applicable work experience (practicing lab and chemical safety, or working in a research laboratory or combination)

Thorough knowledge of scientific research practices, chemical safety, industrial hygiene practices, occupational health, and the regulatory requirements associated with a research university environment.

Enthusiastic work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with the campus community. Demonstrated ability to educate others in safe work practices.

Must be physically capable of walking and standing for extended periods and of lifting up to 50lbs. Ability to work in confined hazardous environments wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus required,

Strong management and supervisory experience. Monitors, trains and evaluates staff and students assigned to the program area. Advise the Assistant Director for Academic Safety on staff hiring/termination.

Excellent communication skills including oral presentations and technical writing abilities. Proficient in the use of technology.

Drivers License Upon Hire Required. 

Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred
