Biological Safety Manual

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Biological Safety Program’s primary mission is to support science in assuring the safety of the research, the scientist, the public and the environment by providing biological safety and research compliance guidance. We provide a wide range of services that include training on handling biohazardous agents and materials, laboratory assessments, protocol/SOP reviews, risk assessments for labs and vivariums, regulatory oversight and guidance for recombinant DNA research, registration reviews for recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules, animal models, human source materials and infectious agents, etc.  In addition, we are responsible for the organization and are voting members of the following safety-related committees on campus: Laboratory Safety Coordinators, Occupational Health Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Infection Control Committee, Health Council, etc.  The Biological Safety Program also manages various campus safety equipment including biological safety cabinets, autoclaves, etc.
